This list is jaw-dropping, but it’s also very misleading. As with everything else in the US today, what we have here is a failure to frame things properly. The problem is rapacious landlords. Sure, they have their own obligations, and we’re all trapped in a matrix of financial dependency etc etc, but Covid has marginally accelerated the destruction of NYC’s street level. It’s bmedeen going on for decades, and if someone had compiled lists like this for 20–30 previous years they’d be shocking too. So read this with the same jaundiced eye you would’ve (or maybe should’ve) brought to, say, the proliferation of American flags in NYC after 9/11.
