Does Erdogan’s government have its equivalent of Iran’s Basiji? Not quite the same, the two nations have a dramatically different histories — but an org of volunteers who are more than party loyalists, almost para/irregulars. The more I look at the pix of crowds of demonstrators in the coup in Turkey, the more I see a certain demographically homogeneous type and, beyond that, a certain brutal style. Couldn’t be more different from the faces of the Turkish spring. So what accounts for that difference?
