Long but interesting view. I get that lots of people think UGH Trump UGH Russia UGH UGH UGH, but that doesn’t seem like a very well-thought-out stance. These questions won’t go away; on the contrary, they’ll probably come to a head in ways that shake your faith that the US can become anything but a bare-faced kleptocratic free-for-all. That doesn’t mean you need to read every scrap of wishful thinking that floats by — I’ve tuned out the shrill stuff. But it’s a good idea to figure out what you think about this and why. There’ll come a time, maybe very soon, when some event — say, Trump firing Mueller followed by a series of resignations and/or firings — will set your feed on fire. This isn’t a celebrity soap opera, and it isn’t an endless extension of the 2016 election. The basic issue is whether the US is capable of responding effectively and stably to foreign efforts to influence elections. If it isn’t, Citizens United will turn out to be a warmup act for Foreigners United: infinite flows of cash and expertise from abroad aimed at reducing the US to one big superfund site. Best line: “Oh, yeah, Donald Jr. — you know he was only my son for a very limited period of time.”
