For pretty much my entire life, the Democrats have argued “We need to move to the right to capture the center — if we seem leftist we’ll alienate the moderates!” It hasn’t worked out so well: growing swaths of the population that could have been Dem supporters were abandoned so the party could suck up to moneyed interests. But now the Dems have a certifiable fascist opponent who’s doing everything he can polarize the population and alienate the remaining moderates. If the fear of fascism won’t focus their and make them see the value of more humane (a/k/a “leftist”) policies, nothing will.
