I remember Obbink from Columbia — he was one of the more pleasant papyrologists (though I took time off to avoid dealing with one of the other ones, so…). My $5 says there’s no f*cking way the Hobby Lobby buyers didn’t know they were buying stolen artifacts. On the contrary, I suspect that they, like some other evangelicals, felt capital-J justified in doing so. They’re like the mythological “Carpocratian” gnostics who got me studying this stuff all those years ago: if the world was created by the devil then so were all the rules that apply to it, so the path to divinity lies in breaking those rules with abandon.
