On a more serious note, to the extent that’s possible, it seems like this Goya kerfuffle missed how strange this moment was. For decades we’ve heard GOPers work themselves into a lather over how Dems have sullied the Office. It’s hard to imagine a better way to do that than by using <🙄>Resolute</🙄> as backdrop for giving a brand of beans a beaming thumbs-up. OT1H we got comic memes of Ivanka QVCing beans in an ICU and AOC crowd-sourcing adobo recipes; OT0H the newscasting sons of New York’s ruling class sputtering tragically about how inappropriate it all was. Something’s missing. The right has developed a repertoire of strategies for generating and exploiting negativity in all its forms; but the Dem side of the political field — the best proxy we have for “the left” — hasn’t. And it’s an amazing failure. How is it even possible for a ‘side’ that supposedly represents different perspectives, openness, and transformation to be consumed by a tragic worldview? I don’t think that’s happening at the street level; but as you go higher up the media food chain things get channeled into a handful of really static forms like the Stewart / Colbert / Noah / Baron Cohen form, which are mainly concerned with the endless loop of hypocrisy.
