There are so many ways this can and will go wrong. For most people it’ll introduce yet another ambient source of systemic dysfunction they’ll have to adjust to. But here’s the rub: toll collectors are being displaced by automation, but the since the MTA knows in advance this automation will fail in basic respects, the responsibility of dealing with those failures will be offloaded onto “150 state troopers and 150 National Guard members placed at the ends of tunnels or bridges.” It’s rare to see this chain of effects laid out so explicitly.
