Quick note on my scan of right-wing websites, and their ankle-biting attacks on the moderator, Lester Holt. America is to abuse like France is to wine — we’ve got the best flavors, the best: triumphalism, mockery, fifth-column, off with his head, yelling at the referee (about time, etc), hating women (not applicable in this case, obv). After the debate the RW sites are really dispirited, with a weakened, whiny tone. Trump didn’t make them feel ‘liberated’ to sh*t-talk, and above all he didn’t look or sound ‘presidential.’ He came off like a combination of (a) that awful relative getting drunk at Thanksgiving and (b) your bad boss who takes out his frustrations — with whatever he’s failing at — on his employees. If one of Trump’s big constituencies is in fact Archie Bunker’s spoor — resentful, angry whites who feel beaten down, put down, and disrespected — then their worlds are full of endless bickering, a lot of it gendered, even if they wouldn’t call it that. My hunch is that a LOT of women, even very giddily delusional right-wing women, smelled his flavor of bullying male rage that shouts down everything in its path with empty bluster about “what I’d do” and “he should just.” Lots of awkward moments in rumpus rooms across America as it dawned on them that talking about Trump’s behavior would mean talking about themselves.
