This article epitomizes why I’m so skeptical about Tufekci. 1700 words of wind-up and she finally gets to the bazillion-dollar question, literally “What can be done?” What follows is two paras of weapons-grade vapor: “we need to realize the nature of the problem,” it “goes beyond more politeness and the right rhetoric,” “cannot be resolved in one sweeping article that offers easy solutions,” etc. She’s a superb writer, and she puts her talents and energy to uses that are better than they are worse — full credit for that. And yet everything she publishes rests on some Neo-like ninja-fu like this. Her repertoire of dodges is more varied than most writers’, though, so it takes work to spot it.
