Most of what people call hypocrisy is absolutely consistent — it’s just that ‘hypocrites’ apply their judgments selectively, within a matrix of cultural distinctions that we pretend don’t exist. So, for example, the NYT can publish these words without a shred of irony, even though the paper has been NYC real estate’s #1 cheerleader for decades: “This is about how the whims of a plutocrat can upend the lives of an entire city block, challenging the culture and the well-being of the people who live there. It’s about coming to terms with everyday existence in New York, where the rich run rampant and the rest of us have to deal with it.”
