This Atlantic piece by Peter Wehner perfectly encapsulates the problem of liberal denialism. His opening line is spot-on — “The GOP is a moral freak show, and freak shows attract freaks.” — but he devotes the rest of the piece to the sanctimonious equivalent of a Diddy party, going from hyperventilating over this to morally outraging over that to pearl-clutching over the other thing. But, to overuse the internettism, the freakishness isn’t a bug, it’s a feature: the GOP has literally and figuratively become the party of, by, and for transgression. Transgression without empathy, to be precise.
