Isn’t this “hyperdemocracy” noise mostly a nostalgic revisitation and extension of Trilateral rhetoric about an “excess of democracy”? (Not the imaginary conspiracy, I mean the book, as in ISBN 978-0814713655). A lot of that 1970s folksy authentism — not the disco / big hair / PBR that clever people keep rediscovering, I’m thinking of the permanent bicentennial ice cream parlor “shoppe” stuff, which keeps being forgotten — was a nostalgic revisitation and extension of an imaginary 1950s. What was so great abou— oh, right, that was when the federal government was giving lots of money to white guys to go to school, get jobs, buy houses, etc.
