Hey, people — “ACAB” etc is fine and all, but take a moment to sit with the wrenching testimony of the Capitol cops. They’re giving you a preview of the Truth and Reconciliation process — or maybe Lustration process — the US so desperately needs. If there’s a way out of the nightmare of systemic (over)policing, these guys (yes, GUYS) are pointing the way with their shock, despair, and tears. My hunch is that the US is barreling toward a place where we’ll need to see more moments like that, maybe many more — and, more than merely see, commit to. So it makes sense for everyone who claims to care about this to carve out some quality some time to ask themself/ves a basic question: How can we think about the subjective dimension of policing? I wish asking that didn’t play into an apologia for systemic racism, but — imo — what matters most is the future: where do we want to go, and how can we get there?
