Great news that the Turd Reich moonwalked away from its lunatic ‘policy’ on international students, but…it did immense reputational damage to US higher ed. Now, the challenge for academics with a stake in this (i.e., all) is to think very deeply about what it means. “Yay, they rescinded it” isn’t enough. The #1 lesson to be learned is that edus need to fundamentally change their financial models. International students may bring in lots of cash, but one net effect is to drive fees way up — which are then ‘discounted’ for US students. Fees need to be slashed, and the only force in academia that can make that happen are faculties. Time to organize — to protect your own futures, sure, but above all because it’s the right thing to do. The indentured servitude of student debt is immoral and unsustainable.
