A friend shared a meme about student debt that pointed out something obvious but rarely noted. Many borrowers have long since paid off the principle and even quite a bit of interest; the debt they continue to struggle under is often just a result of the spread between sane and insane interest rates. My reply:
There are all kinds of legit age-related criticisms to be made about Biden, but it’s a fact that he was like a pit bull when it came to reducing educational debt — he would. not. let. go. Setback after setback, he chipped away at it. The problem was that he only chipped, when he could and should have waved his magic wand and said “SHAZAM! NO SUCH THING ANYMORE!” — especially after the Supreme Court issue that insane immunity ruling. And, if anything, this very issue really exemplifies the tragic aspect of his presidency: his age-related inability to communicate effectively — from his nostalgic faith in a long-gone public sphere that would clearly convey his policies, to his inner circle’s growing efforts to hide him away — he never got much credit for this, one of his main most consistent policies, and one that could and should have spoken clearly to younger generations.
